Tetons
August 2002
In August 2002 my wife and I traveled to Jackson, Wyoming to visit our son, Derek, who was working there for the summer. While the rest of the family slept or relaxed, I snuck out well before sunrise on two days and in the evening one day for some landscape photography opportunities. I had "scouted" the area by map and had pretty much decided where I wanted to make my photographs. As is often the case, being there is different than looking at even a good topo map, so the plans changed. Fortunately I had allowed enough time to get to some good locations.

Grand Teton, Mt. Owen, and Teewinot from Cottonwood Creek. I had planned on shooting this morning from Jenny Lake, but as I got close, the peak on the right, Teewinot, was blocking my view of Grand Teton. I came back to where I had a good view of all three and just happened on this creek.

I saw this cluster of interesting blooms just along the creek. I couldn't resist this one with the bee. I later found that these are Musk Thistles. It's a noxious weed that was imported into the park. They are trying to eradicate them.

We did a float trip on the Snake River which included both a flat, scenic part and some whitewater. We saw quite a few Bald Eagles and Ospreys, but I liked this picture of the three White Pelicans the best.

This is where Ansel Adams took his picture of the Snake River and the Tetons. Even with a three stop graduated neutral density filter the foreground is just barely light enough.

While waiting for the sun to illuminate the mountains behind me, I turned and made this exposure of the pre-sunrise sky reflecting in String Lake.
